Repoussé and Chasing Punches
From DT Online
Description
Repoussé and Chasing Punches have a variety of shaped and textured ends to enable embossed designs and patterns to be produced on metal sheet.
Features and Uses
The two processes are often used together, Repoussé uses small shaped punches to emboss a design on sheet metal by working from the reverse side to raise a design on the face, and Chasing further works this design from the face to sharpen up the detail. The punches are repeatedly and lightly struck with specially designed Repoussé Hammers.
- The lowest cost option is to use a hand-held punch with a hammer but a wide range of automatic punches are available - both Dot Punches and Centre Punches.
- In general, Dot Punches have a sharper point (i.e. 60° instead of 90°) and need only the lower ranges of impact force (e.g. 20N to 50N).
- Automatic punches are simply pushed down against the work-piece and do not need to be struck - indeed, should NOT be struck with a hammer.
