The word beam describes a basic bridge design and is also an old word for tree - such as found in Hornbeam or Whitebeam for example. The first bridges might have been just logs of wood laid across a stream.


Any bridge which is based on pieces of material just lying across a gap is called a Beam Bridge. They can be slabs of stone, concrete or steel girders. They can be made from a single piece of material or built up from different pieces - sometimes to build open frameworks in the form of a beam.They can be solid or hollow.


Many footbridges, railway bridges and motorway bridges are Beam Bridges.
