Drum Sanders are available as ‘cushion drum’ sanders (i.e. the body is made from polyurethane foam ot similar flexible material) ranging from 25mm dia to 75mm dia for use in power drills and pillar drills - although larger diameters exist. Most have the facility to replace the sanding surface as it becomes worn and typically 100 grit is used. ‘Rotary Shapers’ could also be included in this category.

Used as drill attachments in this way, they are very useful for finishing the edges of wood and plastics.

Purpose built machines are more accurately termed ‘Oscillating Vertical Spindle Sanders’ and a ‘Drum Sander’ machine as such, employs a horizontal abrasive cylinder to surface finish wide sheets.

Safety Point! All workshop machines can be dangerous - do not use any machine until you have been trained to do so. Wear eye protection. Sanding dust can be harmful so avoid inhalation by providing dust extraction and/or using a face mask.
