Description

Emery Cloth is commonly available in grit sizes from 40 to 320 and is used principally to polish metals - especially steel.

Safety Point! Never hold any cloths, including Emery Cloths, loosely in the hand when polishing on a lathe - it can become entangled and cause severe injury. Fix emery cloths to a backing stick as shown. Alternatively clip into a sanding block or use an abrasive sponge.

Features and Application

When finishing metal by hand whilst it is held in a vice, pieces of Emery Cloth can be wrapped around a file. To get a good finish, work through grades from coarse to fine and regularly alternate the direction of the file to remove scratches by polishing across them.

Linishers are machines similar to Bench Sanders but use Emery Belts.
