GIMP (acronym for GNU Image Manipulation Program) is a free cross-platform image editor available for GNU/Linux, OS X, Windows and more operating systems suitable for many common image editing tasks (e.g. photo re-touching and editing, colour fills and making backgrounds transparent).
Tutorials are available to get you started which will take a beginner step by step through its many uses.
