A range of portable power Sanders are available to shape and finish materials or to prepare surfaces for painting and polishing.

Amongst these are are the following (from left to right below) :

Orbital Sander - vibrates in small circles, or orbits and is used mainly for fine sanding or where little material needs to be removed.
Belt Sander - is normally used to rapidly remove material and sometimes also for removing paints or finishes from wood. Fitted with fine grit sand paper, they can be used to achieve a completely smooth surface.
Detail or Corner Sander - use a small vibrating head with a triangular piece of sandpaper attached for sanding corners and very tight spaces. Similar but shorter designs are known as Mouse Sander
Palm Sander - can be used single-handed and, with a random orbital motion, are very good for smooth finishing of painted surfaces in between coats when spray painting for example.
Narrow Belt or Filing Sander - can be used for carving, finishing, or shaping wood metal or plastics.

Safety Point! All sanding creates dust which can be harmful if inhaled. Most machines are fitted with dust collection bags which should be used. Eye protection and face mask may also be needed with some materials and when removing paint.
