Round Belt Drive

Description

Small pulleys used in model making can be driven using just thin elastic bands or ‘O’ rings. Round Belt Drive are a step beyond this but still only suitable for transmission of light loads such as in various forms of instrumentation.

Features and Applications

Round Belt Drive are very flexible and can easily be used to route the drive around obstacles, drive pulleys in different orientations or be twisted to reverse drive directions. Modern round belts are made of plastics (e.g. Polyurethane) but traditional old sewing machines, for example, used round leather drive belts.

See Nguyen Duc Thang's example of a Belt Drive transmission between two intersecting shafts. The angle between the blue and yellow shafts may differ from the 90 deg shown. The output shafts rotate in opposite directions. It can be used with rope, round and flat belts, but not V-belts.
