Sledge Hammers are used by Blacksmiths working in pairs where one holds the tool (e.g. Hot Punch, Fuller, Swage or Flatter) in position whilst the other, the Striker, swings the hammer to strike the blow and shape the metal.
Uses
Common weights are between 4lb and 16lb and all have long handles to generate the force required to strike heavy blows. They are also used to break up Concrete and drive in stakes or fence posts for example.
