Start by making a list of all the things which will need to be stored in the lounge then decide which should be stored out of sight and which can be displayed; which items will be needed frequently and which only occasionally.

The simplest form of storage is open shelving on which objects are displayed. Decide what will go on shelves and whether this will increase or stay the same - do you need adjustable shelving for example? Can the shelving make use of any existing wall recess?

Various designs of rack are available to display as well as store CDs, records, cassettes or videos. Alternatively cupboards and drawers can be used to hide things away.

You may wish to consider your own designs for storage or display of these or other personal collections.

Modular systems allow people to start by listing what needs to be stored and displayed and then assembling a suitable system rather than simply providing a box to put everything in which, essentially, is what the traditional sideboard degenerated into.

Consider that modules can be assembled into tall narrow structures in addition to wide low ones. Although they are normally positioned against walls, they may also be used to partition the room.
