&amp;#039;&amp;#039;&amp;#039;Vectors&amp;#039;&amp;#039;&amp;#039; can be represented by lines drawn to scale providing we know:&lt;br /&gt;
*the magnitude&lt;br /&gt;
*the point of application&lt;br /&gt;
*the line of action&lt;br /&gt;
*the direction&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
For example, from any point &amp;#039;&amp;#039;&amp;#039;O&amp;#039;&amp;#039;&amp;#039; as shown, a line can be draw to a scale representing an upward pointing force of &amp;#039;&amp;#039;&amp;#039;2 [[newton|newtons]]&amp;#039;&amp;#039;&amp;#039; and similarly from the same point, a shorter line to represent the downward pointing force of &amp;#039;&amp;#039;&amp;#039;1 [[newton]]&amp;#039;&amp;#039;&amp;#039;.&lt;br /&gt;

Common sense tells us in such a simple example that these two opposing forces could be replaced by a single &amp;#039;&amp;#039;&amp;#039;1 [[newton]]&amp;#039;&amp;#039;&amp;#039;. force pointing upwards from point &amp;#039;&amp;#039;&amp;#039;O&amp;#039;&amp;#039;&amp;#039; &amp;#039;&amp;#039;(i.e. the &amp;#039;&amp;#039;&amp;#039;Resultant&amp;#039;&amp;#039;&amp;#039;)&amp;#039;&amp;#039; and the point &amp;#039;&amp;#039;&amp;#039;O&amp;#039;&amp;#039;&amp;#039; could be held still by an equal and opposite, downwards pointing &amp;#039;&amp;#039;&amp;#039;1 [[newton]]&amp;#039;&amp;#039;&amp;#039; force &amp;#039;&amp;#039;(i.e. the &amp;#039;&amp;#039;&amp;#039;Equilibrant&amp;#039;&amp;#039;&amp;#039;)&amp;#039;&amp;#039;.&lt;br /&gt;
