Models are used extensively in Design and Technology to illustrate an idea or to test out some aspects of it.
Sketching and drawing is a form of 2D modelling and 3D models can help show what a product might actually look like. These modelling methods are described as Iconic modelling because the models look like the finished product.
Other modelling methods are Analogue Modelling, such as circuit diagrams, and Symbolic Modelling using mathematics for example.
