Description
Sandbags are usually circular, made from thick leather stitched together and filled with sand. They are use for supporting work or tools during various Beaten Metalwork processes (e.g. Hollowing or Engraving).
Features and Uses
Sandbags can be used as part of the initial Hollowing process when creating articles in beaten metalwork (e.g. Coppersmithing or Silversmithing).
When used for Hollowing, the Sandbag can be hollowed out initially using either a Bossing Mallet or directly by beating it with with the Planishing Stake to be used later to true the metal being formed.
An alternative to Sandbags for some processes would be to beat the metal into a concave shape carved into the end grain of timber - known as a Hollowing Block.
