Blacksmith's Hammer

From DT Online

Revision as of 12:30, 12 May 2016 by DT Online (talk | contribs)

The heavier Ball Pein Hammers are often used for general forge-work together with Lump Hammers and Sledge Hammers but specialist Blacksmith's Hammers are also available.

A Blacksmiths Cross Pein Hammer differs from the Joiners' Warrington Pattern version in that it is much more robust with a stubby and stout Pein suitable for the heavier task of shaping hot metal.

Straight Pein Hammers (aka Peen) have the Pein running parallel to the shaft and Straight Pein Hammers at right angles to it. Diagonal Pein Hammers are also available and (necessarily) in both left and right handed versions.

Uses

The Blacksmith's Cross Pein hammer is used for general forging work and is an alternative to using a Lump Hammer.

Straight and diagonal Pein hammers can be used by Blacksmiths as Fullers for example. They are commonly available with head weights between 2lb and 4lb.

DT Online Buyers' Guide
  • 2lb to 4lb hammers (1-2kg) are a suitable size for general forge-work in Design and Technology since hammers heavier than 4lb would be difficult for students to use.
  • Straight Pein (or Peen) hammers are more commonly used in the United States and therefore more easily available via a US supplier. This is even more true of Diagonal Pein Hammers.

Note: An alternative is to re-shape an existing old forged steel Ball Pein Hammer head by re-forging it. The completed straight or diagonal 'Pein need not be hardened and tempered since they would be used for shaping hot metal.
