When people are relaxing they need to have their gaze directed to something pleasant. The lack of any focal point makes people feel uneasy, especially when in surroundings with which they are not familiar, therefore the seating area especially should have some focal point.

The fireplace has traditionally provided this focus but increasingly, houses are built without open fires. Many living rooms are arranged around the TV or entertainment centre but there are alternatives worth thinking about.

A display of books on a low table can be effective, mirrors and pictures are often placed above a mantelpiece but the same can be done above a wide side table.

Consider how the room will feel both with natural and artificial light. If the entertainment centre is to be used as the focal point, then care must be taken to choose equipment and house it in such a way that it looks good even when switched off.
