Engineers' Scriber : DT Online Recommendations
Scribers are used to mark out lines accurately on metal. They are ground to a point angle of 30° and must be capable of retaining a sharp point.
- Scribers can be single or double ended and should be made from good quality tool steel which has been properly hardened and tempered such that it does blunt, bend or break easily.
- The 'Handy Scriber' combines a Scriber with a Marking Knife and is therefore particularly useful for general working across several materials (e.g. wood, plastics, metal) as opposed to precision marking out in engineering.
- Pocket Scribers usually have a separate point which is stored reversed inside the body for safety and needs to be unscrewed and repositoned before use.
- Carbide or Diamond tipped scribers may last longer and be able to scribe on harder surfaces (e.g. ceramics) but are often more expensive and more difficult to sharpen.
