Laser Cutter
From DT Online
Description
Laser Cutters used in schools are essentially an X-Y Flatbed Plotter which, instead of a pen, drives a focussed C02 Laser Beam, usually water-cooled, to cut through a range of thin sheet materials (e.g. card, paper, vynil, textiles, leather, ribber, Ply, MDF, Acrylic) and engrave some harder materials (e.g. metals, glass, ceramics, stone).
Features and Applications
In operation, the output power of the Laser Cutter is adjusted to suit the type of material and the depth of cut required.
Some Laser Cutters can be fitted with a Rotary Attachment which enable cylindrical surfaces (e.g. glasses and tumblers) to be engraved.
Safety Point! In operation, Laser Cutting will produce smoke and fumes and, especially in the case of plastics, these can be quite noxious so good ventilation to the outside is required (use a Tumbler Drier type hose to extend the exhaust vent if necessary)
Software
The control or driver software for Lasers will accept files in most common CAD and image formats (e.g. HPGL, BMP, GIF, JPG, DXF) and produce a G-code type file to control the cutter
Note: The C02 Laser are expensive, have a limited life-span and will need to be replaced from time to time. Operating the Laser at around 50% power is advised to prolong its life as much as possible.
Safety Point!
- Fully enclosed machines with interlocks are advised for school use.
- Only Lasers with the laser beam totally enclosed should be used in schools and an interlock provided to prevent operation unless the laser is enclosed - check Laser Safety with supplier.
- Always isolate any CNC machine before adjusting tools or work piece and ensure hands are well clear of the table before switching on - when the program runs : the cutter will move!
