Punching is the process of creating holes or small indentations by forcing a tool into or through the workpiece. Hand punching may involve the use of a simple lever-operated machine or a hammer to strike a small hand-held punch.

Related industrial processes include the use of Machine Presses to perform other Stamping processes such as Blanking and Bending .

In Blanking the punched out piece is used and called a blank; in Punching the punched out piece is usually scrap.

Stamping is usually done on cold metal sheet whereas forming operations on hot metal is called Forging.
