A Gimlet is a small tool which can be used for drilling wood to create pilot holes for screws or holes to receive nails for example. They often have a 'T' handle to provide the required Torque and a screw tip which draws the slightly tapered bit into the wood so care must be taken when used near the end of a piece of timber to avoid splitting.


The cutting action is similar to, and may also be referred to, as a Nail Bit, Snail Bit or Cobra Bit.
