Mallets are tools with larger heads made of softer materials. All Hammers and Mallets are examples of a Class 3 Lever.

They are used to:

  • apply force to other tools (e.g. Chisels)
  • to assemble parts together without damaging them
  • to fold or form soft metal sheets without marking the surface
  • to fold metal sheets without stretching the metal (e.g. to form a Safe Edge on Tinplate products)

Note: Wood or plastics handled tools should not be struck with hammers since this may chip or split the handles.
