Sinks come in a wide variety of shapes and sizes from single bowl through to double bowl and draining board, some with integral drainers, baskets and cutting boards.
Sinks were traditionally made from white glazed ceramic (known as the Belfast sink) then stainless steel became common (but glazed ceramic is making a come-back). Enamelled steel chips and is not as durable but allows colours to be used. Increasingly plastic resin compounds which are hard-wearing and solid coloured are being used.
Sinks are traditionally positioned against an outside wall under a window for easy drainage and good light.
Taps are available in a wide range of shapes and colours. They can be either single hot and cold or in the combined form called a mixer. Mixers should have dual flow to prevent cold drinking water being contaminated by the hot water. Look for aerated taps, which reduce water use. The inlet to most kitchen taps have a half inch BSP male thread.
