A Pump Drill and its variant the Bow Drill, are two ancient devices powered by a simple twist of string.
Originally used to drill small holes (and still used for some craft acitivites) they are now most commonly used in woodcraft and survival courses as a means of making fire by rapidly rotating one piece of wood against another to generate heat by Friction.
