Knurling
From DT Online
Description
Knurling is a process using a Centre Lathe which imparts a criss-cross pattern on to the surface of the work-piece in order to increase grip (e.g. a Centre Punch is usually Knurled for this reason).
Features and Applications
Hardened patterned wheels are pressed against the work as it slowly turns and this impresses the design on to it. A variety of patterned wheels can be used either singly, or more usually, in pairs.
Considerable sideways force is required but some designs of Knurling Tool apply this within themselves rather than relying on pressure being exerted by the lathe cross-slide.
