Description
Sheet Metalworking involves the formation of objects by bending, folding, rolling and joining flat sheets of metal which have been cut to an appropriate pattern - known as Nets and Developments. Simple patterns may be marked out on the metal directly but, for more complex shapes, they can be drawn full-size on thin card and cut out. The card Template may be produced using Geometrical Constructions, CAD or by marking out directly from the job in hand (e.g. when making a machine guard or repairing car bodywork).
A Tinsmith (aka Whitesmith), for example, makes a variety of household objects by cold working various thin and flat sheet metals but commonly from Tinplate.
The same or similar techniques can be used when working Pewter or making objects from Galvanised Iron, Steel or Aluminium for example.
